The Catlins Chronicle: Exploring the South Island's Wild Frontier

Curio Bay: Walking in the Jurassic Era

At low tide in Curio Bay, the retreating ocean reveals one of the world's most intact petrified forests. Dating back over 180 million years to the Jurassic period when New Zealand formed part of the ancient Gondwana supercontinent, fossilised tree stumps and fallen logs lie embedded in the rocky platform. Standing here at twilight, it is not uncommon to witness Hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) waddling up from the breakers to nest in the coastal flax.

Cathedral Caves and Purakaunui Cascades

Accessible only during two hours either side of low tide, the Cathedral Caves along Waipati Beach soar over thirty metres in height within sheer ocean-cut cliffs. The acoustic resonance within the cavern chambers is breathtaking. Farther inland, the multi-tiered cascades of Purakaunui Falls emerge through ancient beech trees, providing one of the most photographed forest settings in the southern hemisphere.
